Zakat
Zakat in Islam
Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and an important act of worship. It is a means of purifying one’s wealth and fulfilling an obligation toward those who are eligible to receive it.
For Muslims whose wealth meets the applicable nisab threshold, Zakat is generally calculated at 2.5% of qualifying wealth held for a lunar year. Zakat helps support individuals and families facing financial hardship and reflects Islam’s emphasis on compassion, responsibility, and care for the community.
Zakat at ISM
The Islamic Society of Michiana (ISM) has a dedicated Zakat Committee that helps collect and distribute Zakat funds within the community.
The committee works to ensure that Zakat assistance reaches eligible individuals and families who are genuinely in need. Requests are reviewed carefully, with appropriate verification and personal consultation to help ensure that funds are distributed responsibly and according to Islamic guidelines.
Over the years, ISM’s Zakat program has supported members of the community facing financial hardship, including single mothers, refugees, converts, elderly individuals, inmates, and people dealing with significant health-related or other financial challenges.
Your Zakat can help provide essential support to families and individuals in our community.

Zakat Assistance
ISM’s Zakat program also provides financial assistance to eligible members of the community who are experiencing financial hardship and need help with essential expenses.
How to Request Zakat Assistance
1. Meet with the Imam or Zakat Committee
Individuals seeking Zakat assistance should first speak with the Imam or a member of the Zakat Committee in person at the mosque. This allows the committee to understand the circumstances and provide guidance through the process.
2. Complete the Zakat Request Form
Following the initial consultation, applicants will be asked to complete a Zakat assistance request form and provide the information required for the committee’s review.
3. Review by the Zakat Committee
The Zakat Committee reviews each request based on the information provided and Islamic guidelines governing the distribution of Zakat funds. Assistance is intended to support eligible individuals and families with essential needs.
Need Zakat Assistance?
If you or someone you know is experiencing financial hardship and may be eligible for Zakat assistance, please visit the mosque during prayer times and speak with the Imam or a member of the Zakat Committee.
